(CMHC) presented its annual Housing Outlook Conference entitled “Real Estate Fever Cooling Down: Where Do We Go from Here?” today to about 1,000 industry professionals. At this conference, CMHC’s experts provided a detailed health check of the real estate market in the Montréal area and across the province and presented the forecasts for 2007.
In 2007, 19,500 starts (-7 per cent) are expected in the Montréal census metropolitan area (CMA), for a third decrease in as many years. In the single-family home segment, starts should fall by 6 per cent to 8,500 units in 2007.
The condominium market, for its part, is reacting to the increase in the number of new unoccupied units in recent years, which is forcing developers and builders to make adjustments. For 2007, the construction of 6,500 new condominiums (-7 per cent) is anticipated in the Montréal CMA. Lastly, there should be 4,500 rental housing starts in 2007, down by 10 per cent in relation to this year. This decrease will be attributable to the expected slight slowdown in activity in the retirement home segment. Read More
